To change the default application a file should be opened with, Ctrl- or right-click on it in the Finder. With the context menu open keep the Option-Key pressed and Open With becomes Always Open With. After choosing an application the file will now always be opened with it.

The OS X Finder offers the possibility to navigate to a folder by directly typing in its UNIX path. To do so use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + G or choose the Go to Folder… command from the Finders GO menu.
